Ultra-Efficiency Heat Exchangers For Chemical and Oil Industries

Komax Systems has been designing and manufacturing specialized shell and tube heat exchangers that incorporate Komax static mixers for the plastic and rubber industries for 20 years. These advanced heat exchangers heat products with viscosities of over ten-million centipoise. Our patented tube side mixing elements dramatically improve heat transfer and eliminate thermal damage possible in shell and tube heat exchangers.

Over the last three years Komax perfected a special non-plugging, low pressure drop static mixer design for low viscosity products that are less than one hundred centipoise.

By jacketing these special static mixers, an ultra-efficient shell and tube heat exchanger was developed. The size of the heat exchanger for a specific heating application was dramatically reduced due to the mixing technology. The turbulence created by the Komax static mixing elements removes the stagnant internal film on the heat exchanger's pipe wall. It is this zero-velocity internal film that prevents high heat transfer in standard shell and tube designs. By removing this internal film with high turbulence created by the internal static mixing elements Komax Systems has developed a highly efficient and smaller heat exchanger for a given heating application.

In the Komax heat exchangers, heat transfer improvements of up to 300% have been documented resulting in reducing the heat exchanger size by two thirds. The static mixer turbulence on the piping wall provides a self cleaning action since the velocity at the pipe wall is no longer zero.

Steam Heater& Oxygen Contacting

In 1990 a Canadian bleach mill asked Komax if it would be possible to inject and mix steam directly into a low and medium consistency pulp stock line. To solve this difficult mixing problem Komax developed and patented a revolutionary static mixer. This very short unit contains six parallel mixing chambers where pulp stock and steam are contacted and mixed. Today these units are installed in 250 mills around the world performing without vibration and noise at high mixing efficiency.

Komax steam heaters replace old style motor driven peg mixers at one-third the cost for handling medium consistency stock. There are no motors, seals or gearboxes to repair or replace. They now find service for heating green liquor, black liquor and white water at flow rates in excess of 5000 gpm.
